HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY:

IMPORTANT PHOTOGRAPHS

Photos have the power to affect change. Here are some that have done just that.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

These photos mainly fall into the category of being taken for the purpose of technological exploration, these were the first of their kind.

SPORTS

Documenting important moments in time, sports photography can, in many ways, be credited with inspiring future athletes and in some cases championing social change.

View from the Window at La Gras

Nicephore Niepce, 1827

The first photo ever taken. Taken using a Heliograph, an early predecessor to the camera.

Muhammad Ali vs. Sonny Liston

Neil Leifer, 1965

This colour photo of Ali towering over Liston cemented Ali as one of sports' all time greats.

ARTISTIC EXPRESSION

These photos are by photographers who pushed the medium forward. They saw photography as art and worked to cement its place there.

OUR WORLD

Photography made the world infinitely smaller. Photos put a face to dictators, humanized suffering and brought the reality of war on the other side of an ocean into peoples living rooms.

Yosemite Valley, Thunderstorm

Ansel Adams, 1945

Ansel Adams was a landscape photographer who dedicated much of his life to capturing the grandiose, natural beauty of Yosemite National Park.

Tank man

Jeff Widener, 1989

The anonymity of the protagonist, the imbalance of power and the act of resistance itself immortalize this photo as a symbol of resistance the world over.  Watch video
