ASSIGNMENT 4.5:

LEVITATION 2

At the beginning of the course you used shutter speed to pull off the illusion of levitating an object. Now that you have some experience creating more interesting compositions, we are going to take it up a level (Get it?)

It's a more involved process, but the results speak for themselves. You'll need to practice a technique called masking in Photoshop, and you'll need to do a little planning. Check out the videos for some ideas and tips, watch the Photoshop tutorial and then get snapping. Depending on your plan, you may need to find your own videos to help you with the technique, but these are a great starting point.

Part 1 | TUTORIAL

PHOTOSHOP

If you already have some Photoshop experience, you have a little advantage here. We are going to be using masking to create a composite of two photos. Watch this tutorial the day before we start the levitation 2 assignment so that you can go out and take your photos following the tips in this tutorial.

Watch the tutorial and start thinking about what your photo is going to be.

Part 2 | IN-CLASS

TRIAL RUN

Having watched the tutorial, you understand what you are supposed to be doing. Go take a couple of photos (1 blank and 1 floating) that you can use to practice the technique.

Part 3 | ASSIGNMENT

Go do it.

Your assignment is to use the camera, location, planning and Photoshop to create the illusion of levitation. Unlike the first time we did levitation, you are not simply using shutter speed and timing. This time around, float something heavy. Float something massive. Spend some time planning and do something you're going to be proud of.

OUTLINE

Using techniques outlined on the website and in class, and building your ideas based on examples we have discussed, take a series of photos that can be used for a levitation photo.

BODY OF WORK

To help me understand your process submit 2 albums on Flickr. The first, called 'Levitation 2: Body of Work' should be all of the photos you take for this assignment. This should include trials, tests and experiments, and should demonstrate your creativity, approach and planning. There is no minimum requirement, but understand that your body of work is informing my assessment of your work. I am judging you in-part based on the effort. These photos will contribute to your thinking and inquiry mark.

SUBMISSION

You will only be required to submit one photo which you will place in an album called 'Levitation 2: Submission' . You may submit more than one final photo if you like. These are the photos which will contribute to both your knowledge and your application mark. These may be, but do not have to be connected to each other stylistically. Once uploaded to a Flickr album, submit the link to Google Classroom and the Flickr discussion.

DESCRIPTION

Write a short reflection outlining your experience with this assignment. Why did you choose the subject you did for this assignment? What did you have in mind when you started? How did this process compare to the Levitation 1 assignment, and what were your big ideas?

You must follow written conventions and proofread your written work. Submit the written portion as a Google Doc in the Brightspace assignment dropbox.
