LESSON 3.3
 COMPLETION TASK: LOGO OF LETTERS

Logo of letters

 MEDIA

Key concepts:

Problem solving, brainstorming, following instructions

For this activity, you will be creating a logo using letters. You will use Illustrator to modify two original glyphs to combine them using one of a variety of techniques. The technique you use will be up to you, based on the glyphs you select to join. The PDF in the sidebar outlines a number of options.

 LOGO of LETTERS

The bottom half of page 5 in the PDF outlines one potential way to connect the glyphs i and m into a logo. Follow along with the graphics here and complete this activity. Save your final ligature logo on your website with a written description of your process.

Choose a typeface with various font styles to give you some stylistic options.

Create separate characters for i and m

Each glyph must be in its own bounding box

Turn the lowercase m to smallcaps M, using the character palatte.

Change the font style to Bodoni 72 Bold

Using create outlines turn the font into an outlined shape, resize it and use shape builder tool to remove any unnecessary geometry from the i glyph

im-4.png

Use the line tool and the shape builder tool (or the pathfinder tool) to remove the leftmost stem in the M

Extra credit: Using the same method as above, use the rightmost stem from the M glyph to create a new i with the correct serifs by duplicating it and flipping it vertically. Note: don't delete the tittle from the i. You'll need it.

This is quite a straightforward activity, but here is a video outlining how to complete the task.

Once you have completed the tutorial above, apply these skills to your own initials. Use the PDF as a guide to help you make decisions about the best method based on the shapes/glyphs of your own initials.

* You should include at least 3 completely different attempts at your own initials using different fonts, varying combinations of upper and lower case and colour or negative space to experiment with options.

Blog 3.3: Logo of Letters: Create a blog post on your WIX website that includes your iM logo and your own initials logo. Include PNGs and outlines as needed. Explain which is your preferred version and why. Include important terms like ligature, glyphs and any type anatomy that is relevant.
