LESSON 1.2

YOUR PORTFOLIO WEBSITE

INTRODUCTION TO BLOGGING AND WEBSITE MAINTENANCE

Key concepts:

  • file formats (.jpg, .png)

  • file size and its impact

  • Hex values and colour

  • interface design / usability

At some point in your future you will probably be a content creator. Whether for a portfolio, to augment a resume, or if you one day run your own business, you will have to get information about you, your product or your business to your potential audience. Currently, one of the most effective ways to do this is through a website. To be taken seriously, your website will need to look professional. We will cover the basics of creating and maintaining a web presence, and we will regularly update the site with work, notes and proof of learning.

 Blog Entry
Requirements

Every student will produce a WIX website as part of their assessment. Many of the in-class activities will be posted to this portfolio with a written description outlining learned skills in the same way a class notebook might be used.

Project pages should include:

  • a title (based on the lesson number and name)

  • an overview image

  • a detail image (if applicable)

  • a description of the activity

  • a glossary of new tools/terms

  • a list and description of new tools used

  • other relevant information

  • any comprehension questions that have been assigned

 YOUR WIX WEBSITE

Your WIX website will act as a study tool and portfolio. This means that it should look professional.  Spelling, grammar and the overall look and feel of your website should be representative of your best work, as with any submitted work. If you wish to create a website with memes, jokes, silly graphics you create in class or even a personal site about your self, this should be done as a separate website. Your portfolio must represent your professional self and class work only.

Any task not completed during class time is expected to be completed for homework and submitted to digitally before the due date passes.

 6 EASY STEPS

In this lesson we will create a website using the WIX interface. It is an easy-to-use, but very powerful site-building tool. The following is an overview of the steps we will use to create your WIX site. The process is covered in detail below.

  1. Create a Wix account and configure your site. Select your desired template (as directed in class) and customize your site

  2. Save your site. Select a name for your site (URL) before publishing

  3. Using the 'Manage Pages' link, remove unnecessary pages

  4. Create a blog section, as directed in class, where daily written updates will be published

  5. Fill in accurate details on an 'about' page (exclude identifying personal information).

  6. Note the URL (www) of your site - you will need to submit it to Brightspace

 BLOG ENTRIES

You will typically have 2 types of posts to create for your WIX website. Posts are divided into blog entries and completion tasks. Though they are similar, the primary difference is that blog entries are heavier on theory (questions, definitions, terms, etc) and completion tasks are heavier on application (images, activities, etc).

For this unit, you will create 2 blog entries based on activities 1.3 and 1.4. You must categorize your blog entry with the Intro tag in WIX.  The links for these two activities must be submitted to the appropriate Brightspace assignment.
