LESSON 2.2
DRAWING TOOLS: WORKING WITH SHAPES
Key concepts:
Following directions, using online tutorials and resources, problem solving, brainstorming, time management, gradients, layers
In this set of lessons we will be introduced to the graphical user interface (GUI). This layout will become very familiar, as all of the Adobe suite follow a similar organizational layout. We will look at the location of tools and navigate the basic interface, pointing out important concepts and tools along the way.
Once we have been familiarized with a few tools, you will create a composition using what we have learned an post the output files on your portfolio.

ELMO
Using shape tools, fill, stroke, colour picker, and pathfinder create Elmo. Use your skills to create Cookie Monster in the same style.
CONCEPTS: main tool bar, fly-out menus, main and sub menus, palettes, the workspace and layers.
TOOLS: shape tools, constrain modifier, right-click menu (arrange), pathfinder
BRIGHTSPACE: upload the .ai (authoring file) to your Brightspace portfolio. Make sure you save it as a .zip file.
WIX: Create a blog entry, and include a PNG of your final image and a screenshot of your outlines in the blog. Explain which tools were used, and explain the difference between an authoring file and an output file.

KERMIT
We build on our skills by using the ‘direct select’ tool to move individual ‘anchor points’ and edit ‘bezier splines’ to modify shapes.
CONCEPTS: anchor points (add/subtract), direct selection, Bezier splines, modifier keys.
TOOLS: pen tool, add/delete anchor point, convert anchor point tool, select/direct select tool
BRIGHTSPACE: upload the .ai (authoring file) to your Brightspace portfolio. Make sure you save it as a .zip file.
WIX: Create a blog entry, and include a PNG of your final image and a screenshot of your outlines in the blog. Explain which tools were used in the making of this graphic.

EL CACTUS
Minor Skills challenge. This is a marked activity. It is like a mini-skills test. Use your skills to create El Cactus as faithfully as you can!
TOOLS REQUIRED: This character will require you to use the ellipse and rectangle tools, the shape builder tool, the brush tool, and the colour picker. You will also need to work with anchor points and the direct select tool.
BRIGHTSPACE: This is an assessment, so it needs to be uploaded to the assignment page in Brightspace. Make sure you save it as a .zip file. You may also save it in your portfolio if you'd like
WIX: Once finished, create a blog entry, and include a PNG of your final image and a screenshot of your outlines in the blog. Explain which tools were used in the making of this graphic.
Keyboard shortcuts:
Select, direct select, pan tool, add anchor point, delete anchor point, convert anchor point, zoom in/out, save
Workflow Concepts:
Selecting and organizing shapes, naming and organizing layers, arranging the stacking order, stroke vs. fill
Key tools/palettes:
